October’s publications continue to highlight the integration of metabolomics with other omics to identify correlations to disease status. In several studies, metabolomics complemented additional experiments that sought to predict disease outcomes2,15,28,36 or treat disease progression.7 One study presented a bioinformatics process that links clinical predictors to metabolic pathways and phenotypes.33 In many studies, the focus is on metabolic pathways that contribute to disease; the next step is to identify a target within the pathway that might respond to treatment or work as a predictor. Combining omic technologies is quickly becoming the go-to approach in these cases.

Humans, and the many environments we are exposed to, add significant complexity to biological processes, and the publications over the last month reiterate the complex nature of the many phenotypes and associated outcomes. Studies this month use case-control approaches and cohort or population studies to tease mechanisms apart. Studies in animals and cells are precursors to clinical trials. In all studies, Metabolon’s metabolomics services helped advance human knowledge and contribute to improving human health and well-being.
