Highlighted Publications

  1. Phenotypically driven subgroups of ASD display distinct metabolomic profiles

Prince N, Chu SH, Chen Y, et al. Phenotypically driven subgroups of ASD display distinct metabolomic profiles. Brain Behav Immun. Mar 31 2023;111:21-29. doi:10.1016/j.bbi.2023.03.026

Description: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder considered to be highly heterogeneous, meaning that there is significant variability in the severity and type of symptoms that individuals with ASD experience. This research group used the Metabolon Global Discovery Panel to investigate metabolic differences between ASD subgroups to gain biological insight into pathways associated with ASD traits. The study revealed that the subgroup of children with the highest degree of maladaptive behavior traits had an increased metabolism of membrane lipids and oxidative species. These pathways may represent important targets for personalized medicine approaches to manage ASD symptoms.

2. Multiomic signatures of body mass index identify heterogeneous health phenotypes and responses to a lifestyle intervention

Watanabe K, Wilmanski T, Diener C, et al. Multiomic signatures of body mass index identify heterogeneous health phenotypes and responses to a lifestyle intervention. Nat Med. Mar 20 2023;doi:10.1038/s41591-023-02248-0

Description: Obesity is a significant risk factor for several chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This research group demonstrated that machine learning-based multiomic body mass index (BMI) estimates are better suited to assess the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions. The Metabolon Global Discovery Panel showed that plasma metabolomics exhibited the most robust response to lifestyle coaching than actual BMI. This study elucidates molecular perturbations associated with changes in obesity status, highlighting the usefulness of blood multiomic profiling for predictive and preventive medicine.

3. An atlas of genetic scores to predict multi-omic traits

Xu Y, Ritchie SC, Liang Y, et al. An atlas of genetic scores to predict multi-omic traits. Nature. Mar 29 2023;616(7955):123-131. doi:10.1038/s41586-023-05844-9

Description: Multiomic analysis is a powerful approach to understanding the underlying biology of diseases. This research group developed genetic scores for 17,227 multiomic traits across 5 platforms, including metabolomics, using the Metabolon Global Discovery Panel. They found that 379 metabolites could be genetically predicted. This study provides a key first step towards a better understanding of the distributions of therapeutically important biomarkers under high genetic control.

4. Community-specific diffusion characteristics determine resistance of biofilms to oxidative stress

Zhang Y, Cai Y, Chen Z. Community-specific diffusion characteristics determine resistance of biofilms to oxidative stress. Sci Adv. Mar 24 2023;9(12):eade2610. doi:10.1126/sciadv.ade2610

Description: Bacteria secrete a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances, which enable the formation of dense aggregates that are called biofilms. These scientists analyzed bacterial pellets using the Metabolon Global Discovery Panel to elucidate the responses of biofilm and bacteria to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Metabolomics demonstrated that under certain conditions, H2Oboosted biofilm growth and that this mechanism occurs via a shift in energy metabolism. These results suggest that H2O2, which is commonly used as a disinfectant, is not suitable for biofilm sterilization and may accelerate the growth of biofilms and worsen infections.

5. Associations between per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and diabetes in two population-based cohort studies from Sweden

Dunder L, Salihovic S, Elmståhl S, Lind PM, Lind L. Associations between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and diabetes in two population-based cohort studies from Sweden. J Expo Sci Environ Epidemiol. Mar 24 2023;doi:10.1038/s41370-023-00529-x

Description: Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals with unique chemical properties that are widely used in industrial and consumer products, such as non-stick cookware and food packaging.  Evidence of links between PFAS exposure and risk for developing diabetes is contradictory. The Metabolon Global Discovery Panel did not reveal any overall significant associations between the three investigated PFAS and prevalent diabetes. However, a significant inverse association was observed between PFAS levels and prevalent diabetes in women only.
