Your Research is Incomplete Without the Metabolome
Metabolomics is functional readout of biology—revealing how genes, environment, and interventions converge. Without it, critical connections between exposure, mechanism, and outcome remain unseen.
Discovery
Metabolomics Reveals What Remains Hidden from Genetics: the Molecular Fingerprint of Exposures
Genetics lays the groundwork for understanding inherited traits, but it doesn’t capture how the environment actively shapes biology. Metabolomics fills this gap by measuring the real-time biochemical imprints of exposures—diet, pollution, microbiome interactions, and more. These molecular fingerprints provide critical insight into how external factors contribute to disease mechanisms, often before symptoms arise. This power of discovery makes metabolomics essential for uncovering unknown pathways, novel biomarkers, and unrecognized drivers of health and disease.
Precision Medicine
Current Health Status is the Readout of your Metabolism; Metabolomics is the Solution that Empowers Personalized Health Management in Real Time
By translating dynamic biochemical data into actionable insight, metabolomics enables truly individualized care. It reveals how a person’s body may or is responding to their environment, diet, medications, and underlying health in real time. This allows clinicians to predict therapeutic response, optimize treatment plans, and monitor outcomes for interventions ranging from lifestyle changes to biologics. With metabolomics, precision medicine becomes proactive, adaptive, and uniquely patient-centered.
Population Health
Metabolomics is the Dynamic Health Measure of your Genes and Environment
At scale, metabolomics helps map the biological consequences of shared exposures—such as air pollution, diet, or urban stress—across communities and cohorts. It enables early detection of metabolic vulnerabilities, stratifies disease risk, and highlights disparities linked to social determinants of health. These insights inform targeted prevention strategies and population-level interventions. Metabolomics thus equips public health leaders with a molecular toolkit to promote equity and resilience across diverse populations.
“Integrated metabolomics is a really powerful tool to understand this entire spectrum of health.”

Exposome Publications and Citations
Metabolon has contributed extensively to publications ranging from basic research to clinical trials.
Genome-wide characterization of circulating metabolic biomarkers
Combining genome-wide association analysis with global metabolomics, this study characterized thousands of circulating biomarkers that define a reference map of genetically regulated metabolism. The results establish a biochemical bridge between genetic variation and disease risk—providing the baseline upon which environmental and lifestyle exposures act.
Metabolome-wide association identifies ferredoxin-1 (FDX1) as a determinant of cholesterol metabolism and cardiovascular risk in Asian populations.
Through a metabolome-wide association approach, this study identified FDX1 as a key regulator of cholesterol metabolism and mitochondrial redox balance. As a novel biochemical target and determinant of cholesterol-related cardiovascular risk, FDX1 defines a mechanistic backbone through which genetic and environmental factors converge to influence cardiometabolic health.
Microbiome-metabolome dynamics associated with impaired glucose control and responses to lifestyle changes.
Using integrated microbiome and metabolomics analyses, this study revealed how diet and exercise remodel the gut microbiome and circulating metabolites in individuals with impaired glucose control. By distinguishing responders from non-responders to lifestyle intervention, it pinpointed pathways of glucose homeostasis and demonstrated how metabolomics links environmental exposures to personalized treatment response.
Associations of APOE variants with sphingomyelin and cholesterol metabolites across the life-course in diverse populations.
Leveraging Metabolon data across multi-ethnic cohorts, this study demonstrated how APOE genotypes shape lipid metabolism throughout the lifespan. These findings show how metabolomics adds biochemical precision to population-based genetic risk assessment.
Metabolic aging as an increased risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
This study applied global metabolomics across a large cohort to define a biochemical signature of “metabolic aging” that predicts COPD independent of chronological age or genetics. By quantifying how lifelong physiological and environmental exposures reshape systemic metabolism, it illustrates how metabolomics captures the molecular fingerprints of cumulative health risk across populations.
Exposome FAQs
Metabolon strives to ensure your metabolomics study is successful and offers key insights into your scientific questions. We support you at every step from study design to data delivery.
What are the Exposome and Exposomics?
The exposome encompasses all environmental influences—from diet and pollution to stress and lifestyle—that shape health across the lifespan. Exposomics is the science of measuring and interpreting those exposures to understand how the environment interacts with our biology to drive health and disease.
Why is Metabolomics Indispensable for Exposomic Research?
Metabolomics turns the exposome into measurable biology—capturing both exposures and their effects in a single snapshot. While genomics tells us what could happen, metabolomics shows what is happening, offering the clearest view of how the environment influences health.
How Does Metabolomics Help with My Exposomics Research?
Metabolon has the most expansive library of named metabolites linked to environmental exposures—ranging from industrial pollutants to microbiome-derived intermediates. This breadth allows researchers to detect both the presence of exposures and their downstream biological effects within a single analysis.
