Metabolomics Provides a Powerful Approach to Understanding how the Microbiome Affects Health & Disease Progression
Presented by Martin Hornshaw, PhD
Director, Scientific Marketing, Metabolon
Studies highlighting key contributions of our microbiota to health and disease continue to mount. While many recent publications associate different bacteria to certain diseases, they have sometimes been criticized for failing to clarify how the microbiome functionally influences disease or promotes health. The language and currency of microbial communities throughout nature are small molecules - metabolites.
The systematic application of metabolomics to microbiome research is remarkably feasible. Combining metabolomics with traditional microbiome genetic research tools has resulted in some exciting findings, particularly in gut microbiome research. We will share recent examples of how metabolomics has informed analyses of the functional consequences of a changing microbiome in health and disease.
