Personal Care & Cosmetics
The beauty of understanding the science
Today’s consumers of personal care and cosmetic products demand demonstrated proof of efficacy, safety and quality. Since materials ingested or applied to the body may interact with many metabolic pathways and with our skin microbiome, traditional methods may leave unanswered questions about the mechanism and efficacy of skin treatments.
Metabolites are the key signals in host-microbe communication. With metabolomics, skin researchers can go beyond simply characterizing the composition of skin microbiota to truly understanding their in vivo functional activity and impact on the host.
Metabolon’s technology can provide a comprehensive survey of the skin metabolome and microbiome from a range of non-invasive skin sampling options, including our proprietary sample preparation process that allows subjects to provide samples using commercially available tape strips. In addition to our global Precision Metabolomics platform, we can quantitatively measure hundreds of lipid analytes on our pre-existing skin lipid panels. With the ability to capture biomarkers of wound repair, UV exposure, hydration, environmental exposures, and more, our proprietary platform has helped researchers understand skin conditions as diverse as dandruff , atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and aging.
Metabolomics has the capability to deliver actionable insights across the skincare product lifecycle, answering fundamental questions to help deliver effective products, whether cosmetics or FDA-regulated skin therapeutics.
An example of Metabolon’s work in skincare is our work with Estee Lauder Companies that leveraged metabolomics to understand the skin’s circadian rhythm, which deepened the understanding of skin biology with aging to ultimately enable healthier-looking skin for older consumers. Read more here.
