Understanding drought tolerance in plants is key to developing crop improvement strategies to combat this economically devastating environmental stress. Relatively few angiosperms have the ability to survive extreme desiccation of vegetative tissues; these are termed “resurrection plants.” The metabolic mechanisms associated with predisposition, initial stress response, and progression to full desiccation are not well understood.
