We can analyze almost any sample type. Metabolon has analyzed plasma, urine, CSF,
amniotic fluid, cell pellets, cell media, multiple tissue, crevicular fluid and
raw materials, just to name a few.
Metabolon can measure small molecules, biochemicals and metabolites with molecular
weights typically less than 1800 daltons. These include amino acids, amino acid
metabolite, polypeptides of up to 15 amino acids, sugar and sugar metabolites, many
types of lipids, nucleotide and nucleotide metoblites including precursers and degradation
products, dietetic compounds, drug and drug metabolites, and xenobiotics.

Xenobiotics
The un-matched or un-named biochemicals are identified (retention time, nominal
mass and spectra), quantified and tracked in the database. These, along with the
named species, are analyzed for significant change and are reported. Many times
the un-named biochemicals are of interest and can be identified later by structural
elucidation.
Typically in ten weeks from receipt of samples we conduct an initial meeting to
present data and an initial conclusion. Two weeks following this initial presentation,
a final report is completed and provided to the client.
Raw analytical data is processed in our own proprietary software which provides
identification and relative quantification of the biochemicals.
We have several statisticians on staff and can perform many different types of statistical
tests depending on the study and the needs of the client.
We typically provide a q-value for assessment of false discoveries.
Our proprietary software automatically detects and eliminates artifacts using follow
up data accumulation.
30% of process samples are dedicated to QC. We run matrix samples regularly, that
are either derived from a pool the customer establishes or an in-house serum matrix
control, which gives us a measure of the overall process variability.
ThermoFisher Linear Ion Trap
Yes, we do. Many of our clients have found this service to be a valuable addition
as a follow up to their study.

For minimum statistical power, the following requirements must be met:
- The number of samples in the control and experimental groups must be balanced (i.e.
same number in each group)
- The number of samples in each group depends on the biological variability of the
system. Below are the minimum number of samples for each group:
- Cell culture: 6
- Animals: 8
-
Humans: 10
For example, in a study involving mice exposed to a carcinogen, the minimum number
of samples for the study would be 16, 8 control mice (not exposed) and 8 experiment
mice (exposed).
We offer a detailed sample preparation guide that is provided once a study is initiated
that offers detailed, step-by-step instructions for sample preparation and shipment.
In some cases, yes. Our project managers can work with you to decide if this will
be possible for your individual study.
