Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes has a huge impact on patient quality of life and healthcare costs. According to the American Diabetes Association there are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware they have the disease. Managing the disease and its complications can last for 20 to 30 years. Long-term complications include cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy.
There is significant unmet medical need in diagnosing the diabetes progression, determining appropriate therapy, and predicting long-term outcomes.
Using our metabolomics-driven biomarker discovery platform, Metabolon has discovered a number of significant biochemical markers indicative of Type 2 diabetes. These markers are currently being incorporated as part of Metabolon’s Quantose™ Series of diagnostic products. The Quantose products will be targeted at different stages of diabetes: pre-diabetes, drug efficacy, complications of the disease.
